How to Choose the Correct Length of Dock Steps
Adding stairs to your dock or
swimming pool area is one of the smartest ways to make the space safer for you,
your loved ones, and your guests. These dock steps and swim ladders don’t just
allow you to easily get into the water, but also helps you quickly get out of
it if there is an issue.
The key to getting the most from
your dock
steps is to make sure that it is the
right length to fit your specific location and needs. There is typically 12”
between most steps, which means--for example--if you are standing on the last
step of a 3-step ladder, you are going to be 3 feet below the mounting surface.
The more steps you have, obviously, the easier it will be for you to step out
of the water. So how do you choose the right amount of steps?
Usually, you want to the last step
of your swim ladder or dock steps
to be at least two feet below the water surface so you don’t have to struggle
or climb as you make your way out of the water. For example, if the distance
between the mounting surface to the water surface is only 24”, then you would
want to use a 4-step ladder to ensure you have the right amount of surface both
under the water as well as up to the mounting surface. The further your
mounting surface is from the water, the more steps you will want to consider
adding.
